SACRED MOUNTAIN TEMPLE IN THE WILDERNESS

MOUNTAIN TEMPLE DESTINATIONS

ONE OF THE HIGHEST LOCATED CLIFFSIDE TEMPLE

This entire beautiful region is an ideal place for pleasant and relaxing hikes, at the heart of the Khangai mountain range, and at the edge of the Orkhon valley, the culture and land of nomadism for 2 millennia, and registered to the United Nation’s World Heritage.

Here, our destination will bring major landscapes contrasting one another: starting with the large steppes of central Mongolia, we enter the forested mountains of the Khangai, for a beautiful panorama, and a spiritual site charged with energies. Here, we will hike up to one of the highest temples in Asia - the Tuvkhun monastery culminating at 2600m above sea level, a treasure of both Buddhism and for the History of Mongolia, is one of the oldest in activity monastery to date since 1653.
Both famous and a quiet location, it is one of the most picturesque places to observe high lamas practicing their meditations and peaceful work. Surrounded by the creative literature of Buddhism, mantras and sutras, and the poems composed by Zanabazar himself, the first Buddhist leader of the country.
It nowadays became one of the most visited places by the Mongols and the foreigners alike. The site is connected to our outpost by a beautiful little trail, which only Gobi Mountain Lake is using, starting from the South of the nomadic family we work with. We will use our vehicle to link the family campsite and the forested area where we will start our hike. The trail itself has never been used by other tour agencies, and the family we work with also do not welcome tourists, a chance to witness the true nomadic activities they live by.

This place is a natural place where we can combine cultural, historical, and spiritual interests together for your pleasure and quietness. Hikes here are very beautiful.

Your Experiences In

MOUNTAIN TEMPLE DESTINATIONS

The cultural, historical, and spiritual highlights of the region will gently be waiting for you for an hour driving from Kharkhorin. For this local journey, you will be supported by our jeep for a short drive of about 4 km uphill, up to the edge of the mountain where we start the main hike. We will walk for another 4 km until we reach the top of the sacred mountain - of which the summit represents the monastery. There, will be a beautiful occasion to make a stop for our packed lunch. Spending our time there, we will see the meditation cave beside the monastery itself, the monastery, the Ovoo (stone heaps used as shrines, commonly placed in high mountains and sacred locations), and the region with an incredible view 360 degrees around, over the valleys and the mountain range of the Khangai. The global ascent is 350m, for an 8km total walking for the day, after we reach back our car downhill. This is a beautiful place to spend 2 nights in Kharkhorin town, to practice small hikes, and bring up our spirit, along with one of the most spiritual landscapes of the country.

Meet The

TEMPLE NOMAD FAMILY

The couple of horse breeders we work with are named Mende (the Wife), and Ganzorig (the husband). They live by the land, thanks to their many horses and especially the mares they milk to produce dairies and the iconic Airag, or fermented mares’ milk. Their Airag is very fresh, and the taste must be tried by any traveler crossing their land. During our time around their camp, we will observe their daily tasks, like the milking, gathering the horses, but also we will sit down and talk about their family roots connected to Buddhism, and how one of their sons chose to become a monk, currently living and working at the Gandan Monastery in Ulaanbaatar. The entire family including the family of their son, and cousins living very close is quite large and very warm. Many of their children will indubitably come and ask a lot of questions about you and will want to show one of their treasures: the rescue of a newborn fawn (baby deer), in its very first days of life. This is a rare thing in Mongolia, and the touching family will have many stories to share together.
