THE CAMELS AND THE HERDERS

The original birthplace of the Mongolian Camels(Bactrian) was the great Gobi. Mongolians domesticated wild camels and bred them. The two native humped camels have excellent potential as they are used for draught power, transport, wool production, and meat. Camel wool is vital for making clothes, blankets, jackets, and socks, and also can be twined into rope. Camel meat, similar to goat, is eaten in steamed and fried dumplings. The high resistance of the camel to the hot desert climate in summer is due to the economic use of reservoir water. Camel reduces the frequency of respiration and they are not subjected to sweating through the nose cavity; paunch of camel also favors the economic use of water. Camel can survive without food and water for 3 to 4 days.

Mongolia has successfully preserved pasture-supported animal husbandry under the conditions of a traditional nomadic lifestyle. For centuries, Mongolian herders have maintained five types of livestock: Bactrian camels, horses, cattle, sheep and goats. Camels harbor many specific physiological characteristics that enable the production of beneficial items such as milk, meat, and fur despite encountering harsh desert ecological conditions. A majority of the domestic camels in Mongolia referred to as Mongolian native camels, are bred as multipurpose animals and do not represent particular morphological or biologic features.

THE MYSTERY OF THE SAND MOUNTAIN CAMP

The newly opened the Mystery of the Sand Mountain camp is located in the heart of the Great Mongol Els sand dunes, about an hour walk from the Sand Mountain lodge. The camp was recently established with the environment in mind, making the entire campsite as minimally visible as possible. Set in a sandy hillside, the Mystery of the Sand Mountain camp overlooks terrain dotted with little rocky hills and giant dunes. Look closer and you’ll begin to see the overwhelming Gobi. Here, you’ll be able to get up close and personal with enormous sand mountains. There’s a family tent with two bedrooms and a sitting area special for you. The main dining tent unites like-minded travelers to join for scrumptious fare and great conversation as you discuss what incredible game sightings you experienced that day. Inspired by modern technology, the turbo tents are wind-resistant, inherently cozy with charming beds and comfy blankets.
